Firelands Habitat for Humanity is a Christian house-building organization serving low-income families in Erie & Huron Counties and the city of Bellevue.  Since their inception in 1990, they have completed 72 homes, providing home ownership opportunities to families who do not qualify for conventional financing.   These 72 homes have provided safe shelter for 107 adults and 174 children in the Firelands area.  For more information, visit www.firelandshabitat.org.

The Firelands College Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa is offering a $1,000 scholarship to a graduate of any high school in Erie, Huron or Ottawa counties who is a sophomore or beyond, in the field of education and who is presently enrolled in an accredited college or university.  The scholarship is awarded on the basis of character, academic ability, and school and community involvement.  Scholarship applicants must intend to teach after graduation. Scholarship applications may be obtained from the BGSU Firelands Financial Aid Office, One University Drive, Huron, Ohio 44839, or by calling Ben or Katharine Schneider, scholarship co-chairpersons, at 419-625-4104.  Completed applications for this scholarship must be returned to the committee and must be postmarked by Jan. 10, 2010.

 

Firelands Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 11001 Route 250, Milan, Ohio is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Habitat ReStore accepts and recycles new or used building and remodeling materials that are in good condition—saving landfill cost as well as providing a tax deduction.  Items that are especially needed are doors, windows, cabinets (kitchen or other) and working appliances (that are not more than 10 years old). ReStore does provide donation pickup services once a week when scheduled in advance. Restore sells these items at 50% to 70% off retail prices to the public. Firelands Regional Medical Center will be offering a four-week Childbirth Preparation class on the following dates: Wednesday, January 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 6 to 8:30 pm. Childbirth Preparation classes are held at Firelands Regional Medical Center, South Campus, 1912 Hayes Avenue, Sandusky. Participants will learn breathing patterns and relaxation exercises to be used during labor and delivery.  Induction of labor, medication and anesthesia options, Caesarian birth and recovery will also be discussed. If you think you might be interested in becoming a Master Gardener, now is the time! Erie County is holding a training class this winter. Classes will be held Monday evenings; January 25 – April 26, 2010. Class will be held from 6:00p.m. – 9:00 p.m. in the Erie County Service Center located at 2900 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Upon your successful completion of the training program, you will receive the Master Gardener Intern card. You will then spend one year as an intern while completing the 50 hours of volunteer time to become a certified Master Gardener Volunteer. The first step to becoming a Master Gardener is completing the OSU Volunteer Application process. Applications are available at the OSU Extension Office and at http://erie.osu.edu. Applications must be completed and returned to the office by November 6, 2009. After completing the application, an interview with the Extension Educator will take place and a background check must also be conducted. Once you are accepted into the program there is a training fee of $125. This fee covers the cost of manuals, meeting materials, speaker fees, and certificates/pins.
